Classic and Minimal
Hey Y’all!
I’ve been getting a lot of questions with people trying to figure out what style they have, so I’m starting a series called “What’s My Style?”. Because there are SO many style (and combinations), I’ll cover two styles in each post. I’ve done a snippet of some of these on my Instagram and Facebook pages, but here we’ll get a little more in depth. I also have a series here about building an intentional wardrobe that covers Defining Your Style. Let’s start with Classic and Minimal.
Classic Style
Classic is one of the more enduring styles, which is how it got its name. It’s timeless and most women will have at least a few classic pieces in our wardrobe. Classic pieces are usually well-constructed and can possibly last you several years with regular wear. For this style you may want to invest in a few high quality garments that will always make you look good. The items for this style are well tailored with clean lines, which is one of the reasons this style has been around and will be around for years to come.
Here are some of the items that represent the Classic Style:
The trench coat
A white button down shirt
A pencil skirt
A tailored jacket or blazer
A cashmere sweater
The turtleneck sweater
Tailored pants
A shift dress
Jeans
Ballet flats
The classic pump
Animal print shoes and accessories
Diamond or pearl studs
*Examples of people with this style are Jackie O, Marlene Dietrich, Lauren Bacall and Jodie Foster
Minimal Style
I like the philosophy of a Minimal Style. Minimalism is about having less and enjoying the things you have more, so how does that translate into fashion? Most people with the Minimal Style have capsule wardrobes. A Capsule wardrobe is a limited number of items to make up a wardrobe. This number could be 10, 25, or 37 items. It’s really up to the person. The goal is to only have things in your wardrobe that you absolutely love. That means it’s even more important to buy the right things, clothes that are of high quality and fit you extremely well. I don’t have a minimal wardrobe, I have well over 50 items in my wardrobe. I also love to layer, which is not one of the things that minimalists do, at most there is one jacket/sweater.
Here are some items you’ll find in a Minimal wardrobe:
A simple jacket/cardigan
A designer little black dress
One single handbag
A minimal watch
Dark wash jeans
Simple jewelry
Neutral colors (black, white, grey, nude/camel/blush, light blue)
*Examples of people with this style include: Sofia Coppola, Angelina Jolie, Audrey Hepburn.
For both of these styles, clothes are extremely well tailored and high quality, and the simplest pieces make the biggest impact. Designers and stores that cater to either of these styles are: Anne Klein, J. Crew, LOFT, Madewell, Macy’s and Nordstrom.
